SMARTiC – a basic overview

SMARTiC is designed for centralized and regional traffic control rooms, for city traffic centres and for regional control rooms for road network management

  • it collects all available data on the traffic situation and processes it uniformly
  • it provides complex visualization of traffic information and the tools for control centre operators
  • it ensures coordinated traffic management based on an extensive database of traffic situations and pre-defined scenarios for the control and management of traffic
  • it provides traffic information to institutions, organizations and the public
  • it is based on a unified, intuitive graphical user interface
  • it is modular and scalable; thanks to its modularity, the system can be easily expanded with additional modules and functions

Database and data warehouse

The basis of the whole SMARTiC system is a data warehouse, which consists of data and an application kernel.

The data warehouse stores all the collected data on the traffic situation for use in the control system, and also historical data for use in applications for traffic engineers.

The data kernel includes a dataset that creates the basis for the localization of all phenomena and devices in the data registers.

Datasets of the downstream network

  • A unified model of the road network is the primary reference layer.
  • A description of the road network consists mainly of:
    • the geometry of the road sections, their length, their mutual physical and logical connection and their relationship to transport routes
    • Section and operational stationing
    • description of the disposition of the roads by width
  • The localization database is a secondary localization system for the provision of information on traffic via RDS-TMC.

The methods of the application kernel allow the creation and editing of the relation of phenomena (reference) to a model of the road network and the import and export of data to/from the data warehouse.

Data collection and processing

allow the collection of all information on the traffic situation from various sources, and the subsequent verification, fusion, aggregation and storage of the information in the data warehouse.

The information sources are telematics devices, for example, detectors, cameras, counters, traffic lights controllers, etc., and also information systems of external organizations, such as the police, the fire and rescue service, the ambulance service, road network managers (closures), call centre operators and others.

Traffic monitoring 

Provides the operator with a comprehensive overview of the current traffic situation and ensures the monitoring of the technical condition of telematics devices.

Using the rule base, the system reacts to a high occurrence of events with warning messages.

Traffic management

Using the rule-base, it responds to verified traffic situations and proposes solutions to traffic situations using control and management scenarios. The rule-base contains a management scenario for specific traffic situations with multiple sub-orders, for example speed limits, no overtaking, information on VMS, etc.

This module proposes measures for the current traffic situation in order to ensure continuous and safe operation.

Traffic information dissemination

Ensures the provision of clear and comprehensive information on traffic which was imported to the SMARTiC system from various sources

  • incidents entered into the system by operators, entered on the basis of camera monitoring, for example incidents from external sources, e.g. the system of records of road closures, the police, the fire brigade, etc.
  • incidents generated by source of traffic data
    • data from telematics devices
    • data from the module for the calculation of travel time

Traffic information is processed into an authorized form, verified, digitally and geographically localized and encoded in the Alert-C protocol.

System administration

The system administration provides the necessary functions for the integration of telematics devices, the administration of the rule-base, management of control and management of traffic, the management of users and their access rights, etc. Unified communication interface.

Communication is ensured through protocols in the XML format.

Analytic applications for traffic engineers

Provide data and tools from statistical assessment and the implementation of traffic-engineering analyses.
